Father’s Day Thoughts… | Rich Life Letter #106

Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there!

Hope you’re having a great day and getting to do whatever you want on your day.

And, because I’m an estate planning attorney (and a father, and a son who’s lost a dad), you know I have to take this a little dark… :)

When I woke up this morning I was thinking about all the dad things one thinks about.

And one of the things that came up was the fact that I’m only going to have my kids in the house on Father’s Day for a few more years.

Then they’ll be all grown up doing their own things, eventually having their own Father’s (and Mother’s) days.

And I was reminded about some math I saw a while ago about the time we actually get to spend with our kids.

Something like 90% of the time happens before they’re 18.

As they grow up and go out into the world you see them less, which makes sense.

And, when you start thinking about it in that way, you can start to count the number of times you have left to actually hang out with your parents (and vice versa if you are the parent).

If you only hang out for Christmas, for example, you only have as many Christmas’s that are left in someone’s life to see them.

Could be 10.

Could be 20.

But no matter the number, it’s never enough.

And that brings me to my message of the day.

No matter your differences (and, just an aside, if they’re political, just get over it and have some grace – people can have different viewpoints), no matter the struggles going on in people’s lives, enjoy the time you have with your people.

It’s often far less than we think we have.

Have a great day!

Cheers,
