Receiving an Inheritance? Please Read. | Rich Life Letter #125

Happy Sunday!

Earlier this week an elderly lady hired us to update her Trust. We’re going to call her Grandma.

It was made with her husband, who passed away several years ago.

The current state of the Trust splits everything equally amongst the kids.

Grandma wanted to give some of her money directly to her grandchildren, who are now all grown (I think the youngest is in their 30s).

I told her, “no problem. We can take care of this for you. It’s a quick and easy process.”

A few days later I received a message from Grandma.

“Please hold off. My kids are angry I’m making the change and I’m not sure what I’m going to do.”

If you’ve made it this far, and you are receiving an inheritance, I have an important message for you.

YOUR PARENT’S MONEY IS NOT YOUR MONEY.

You are entitled to nothing.

You deserve only what they want to give you.

And you should support and respect their ability to do what they want with their money.

I see this far too often. The kids acting like this money, which they haven’t earned, haven’t saved, haven’t invested, is theirs.

Wrong.

Hopefully not too harsh of a message this week, but it needed to be said.

Parents, do what you want with your money (including spending it and giving it away while alive when you can enjoy it and see its impact).

Kids, stop acting like you’re owed something.

Okay, rant over. :)

Have a great week!
