Creating Great Traditions | Rich Life Letter #032
It’s been a while since I wrote one of these newsletters. Every time I do I say I’m going to start writing them more often.
This newsletter is no different. :)
What I want to talk about today is something I think everyone understands but something we’re not always intentional about.
Traditions.
If you’re not a sports fan, you probably didn’t know that this past weekend is one of the best weekends of the year – it’s the start of the NCAA basketball tournament.
I love college basketball (I’m a Jayhawk, after all) and want my kids to enjoy it too.
I think sports in general are great metaphors for life, so any way I can find to get my kids interested in them, I do.
And this tournament provides a great opportunity for exposure to that.
With that being said, I don’t want to force my kids to sit down and watch basketball with me.
That’s not fun for anyone.
So I decided to create a tradition around the tournament.
Every year we have a family NCAA bracket, and the winner of the bracket gets to be in charge of what we do for the day.
Water slide park, Dave & Busters, bowling, and tremendous amounts of ice cream have been involved in the past.
But in doing the bracket challenge we all have something to talk about, a shared experience, and, with each passing year, it becomes something everyone looks forward to doing.
So today, take a couple of minutes and think about the traditions you have in your family, the traditions you want, and find a way to make them something everyone looks forward to.
My bracket is busted already for the year (my team lost…) but I’m still having a blast tracking everyone’s score, talking a little trash, teaching a little basketball, and enjoying a fun activity with my people.
I hope you have some of those things in your life too.
Cheers,
Christopher Small
