The Art of Spending Money | Rich Life Letter #135

Brooke and I snuck away from cold (but sunny!) Seattle this weekend to enjoy the sun and warmth of Cabo San Lucas, and while here (I’m technically still here) I picked up a book called The Art of Spending Money that was so good and so relevant I thought I’d talk about it here in the newsletter.

Before I get to that though, a quick announcement. For those of you in the Client Care Program our first quarterly lunch and learn will be this Thursday at noon PST. I’ll email you information about how to attend this week.

Okay, back to the book.

The premise of The Art of Spending Money is pretty straightforward – we tend to be happier when we spend money on things that intrinsically bring us joy, rather than provide external validation.

It’s not a book expounding that money is bad – far from it.

The idea though, that money itself can bring you happiness is challenged.

We all need a certain amount of money to feel safe. Enough to eat. Enough to live in a comfortable place. Enough to enjoy the things we like.

And everything over and above that can take on a very unsatisfying feeling if it’s not used to cultivate those things that make most people feel fulfilled: family, friends, community.

This isn’t going to be a long post lecturing you on these ideas that I think most people intrinsically understand, even if they have a hard time living them. I just wanted to remind you that your money can be a tool for your happiness, if used properly.

If you like to read, I’d encourage you to check the book out. It’s a good one.

Have a great day! And go Hawks!

Sincerely,
