How Doctors Die… | Rich Life Letter #019
If you’ve completed your estate plan with me you are fully aware of the part of the process where you have to decide whether or not to remain on life support if you are in a vegetative state – for many people it’s the most difficult decision of all of those being made.
Many people ask me what I’d do or what most people do, or some variation on that theme.
I always tell them people are all over the board on their choices (because they are) and they should just make the best choice that they can at this time and in this moment.
And that advice usually isn’t enough. :)
People want more. Heck, I’d love to have more.
And now I kind of do. So I wanted to share it with you.
I recently read an article titled “How Doctors Die” – you can read it here – https://www.saturdayeveningpost.com/2013/03/how-doctors-die/2/ – and it chronicled how many doctors personally face terminal illness and end of life decisions.
And it was quite fascinating.
Spoiler alert – contrary to what you might think, many doctors opt for as LITTLE treatment a possible when facing a terminal diagnosis.
Their reasoning is pretty simple – they’d rather manage their pain and go out with friends and family than wither away or face the pain (both emotional and physical) of fighting.
Whether you agree or not, it’s an interesting perspective on this decision we all face.
I’d encourage you to read it.
And, as always, if you want, tell me what you thought about it!
Cheers.
Christopher Small
