My Father’s Day Confession… | Rich Life Letter #003

Happy Monday to you!

I’ve decided, after about a three month hiatus, that it’s time to get back on the weekly newsletter horse. I have too much to say, and by holding back from you I’m really doing you a disservice.

If you don’t remember (or if you’re pretty new to my world), Rich Life Letter is an outlet for me to talk about some of the higher lever concepts I’m constantly thinking about.

It’s less “check out this new trust” or “here’s a new estate tax strategy” and more “live your life to its fullest.” You’re right, it’s a little woo-woo, but if you give it a chance I think you’ll come to like it.

And, besides, it’s only once a week, so you can probably handle it.

Okay, now that the catch up is out of the way, let’s talk about my Father’s Day confession.

Some of you probably already know this, but I think with the moment so close in time, it’s fitting to talk about why I started this law firm in the first place… my kids.

For most people, even most dads, Father’s Day is a time when people say thanks to dads and give them a couple of ties, and let them pick the activities for the day (I love the ties honey!).

And that’s what it is for me too. At least from the outside.

What I’ve found myself doing more and more around these times is taking a minute to reflect back and think about how cool and fun it is that I get to be a dad.

That I get to help shape the lives of these three kids.

That I get to help give them self-confidence.

That I get to teach them my amazing dance moves (I’ve got them).

That I get to teach them how to see money as something that can empower them and provide opportunity and not something to be afraid of.

That I get to teach them about humility and hard work and keeping your word.

That I get to teach them about getting more flies with honey than vinegar.

That I get to show them what living a great life is all about.

Which brings me back to why I started this firm. It allows me to have these kinds of conversations with so many more people than just my friends and family.

I always say when you come to my office “I don’t care what you do, I just care that what you want actually gets done,” and that’s true. I’m not trying to make you care about any of these things like I do.

BUT, if I can get you to think about them, just a little, before make your decisions, I feel like I’ve done what I exist on this Earth to do.

At the end of the day, I hope you come to enjoy these newsletters, to share them with people if you are so inclined, and to be okay with not getting your run of the mill lawyer newsletters (which even I don’t like to read). And maybe, just maybe, your life has a little more joy, a little more fun, and a little more flair because of it.

In the future I will throw in some links to some estate planning type of stuff I think you might find interesting, and once a month I’m planning on doing a deep dive on an estate planning topic, but that’s only because it’s my job to keep you informed. My goal will always be to try to make you think first.

Sincerely,

Christopher Small
