What NCAA Tourney and Estate Planning Have in Common

You may not know this about me, but I love the NCAA tournament.

I was born and raised a Kansas Jayhawk fan (in Kansas) and eventually went on to graduate from there twice (undergrad and law school).

At KU we love basketball, and we’re usually pretty good at it, which makes this time of year very special.

Every year I fill out a bracket to pick who I think the champion of the tournament will be, and every year I pick the Kansas Jayhawks.

It doesn’t matter if they are the favorite or a 5 seed just hoping to make it a few rounds.

I pick them because I have faith in them, despite whatever evidence might be in front of me to the contrary.

I would rather hope they are going to do great things than face reality and plan more realistically.

Now, you are probably wondering “how does that tie in with estate planning?”

We tend to use this same philosophy when it comes to estate planning.

We have faith that our families will do the right thing, will respect our wishes, and will use our hard earned money wisely, even though all data points decidedly in the other direction.

I think hoping and wishing is just fine when you’re talking about a college basketball game, but when you’re talking about the livelihood and future success of your family it might be wise to plan a little more carefully.

If you’ve already done your planning that’s great. If you haven’t, or you know someone who hasn’t, feel free to set up a time for us to talk. It’s free, it’s easy, and I guarantee you’ll leave with a true sense of what your family needs to continue heading in the right direction.

Hope your bracket stays intact throughout the weekend!

Sincerely,
