Back to School Reminder! | Rich Life Letter #157
If you have kids still going to school, this is a bittersweet time of the year as they head back for another year of learning and growth.
Well, bittersweet for some I guess. Mostly just sweet for me. :) I love my kids, but man am I ready to get back into that school time routine!
No matter your feelings on the return, it is imminent, and that makes this a great time to remind all of you with kids going off to college of the importance of the Power of Attorney and Medical Power of Attorney for your kids.
We all know that once we turn 18 we are considered adults in the eyes of the law and the world, but that doesn’t always click when it comes to our kids (we always see them as our babies).
Because of this, we often forget that after the age of 18 your ability to help them with financial affairs and medical events is significantly diminished without the proper documents.
Your kids are entitled to the same privacy laws and protections as we are after that 18th birthday.
The good news is, though, that fixing that problem is relatively easy.
Your kids can sign a Power of Attorney giving you the ability to help with financial affairs and a Medical Power of Attorney to help with medical affairs allowing you to keep on keeping on when it comes to parenting.
Your kid will be the one to sign, and they also have the power to revoke if they so choose.
As you send those kids off to school, think about whether or not this is something you need. It makes life as a parent much easier.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Christopher Small
