How I Progressively Improve (Goal Thoughts) | Rich Life Letter #034
The first quarter of 2023 has just come to an end. Can you believe it?
2023 is already 25% over. Man it seems like it’s going fast.
I do love the changing of quarters, though, as it gives me an opportunity to think about, to set, to refine, and to talk about goals and goal setting.
Back in the day, I used to approach goal setting like most people out there in the world probably do.
I’d pick a number or a thing that I wanted to do and then I’d go get it.
I want to make a million dollars this year.
I want to lose 20 pounds.
You know how that goes.
And while I was able to hit many of those goals I set, in some ways they always felt empty.
So I started doing something different.
I started by taking a step back and thinking about and writing down what I wanted my perfect life to look like.
I thought about and wrote down what a perfect business would look like.
And then, instead of setting some arbitrary goal for the year and for the quarter, I’d look for the closest domino in my dream life (and my dream business) that I could knock over.
And that is the thing I would pursue – changing habits and incorporating new things a little at a time to build the life that I want.
I wanted to share that with you just in case you were tired of the old goal setting game.
And I wanted to share some of my goals for the firm in Q2.
But first, my big vision.
You may find this strange, but my goal actually isn’t to be the best estate planning and probate attorney.
It’s not on my list at all.
The reason?
My goal is to own and operate the best estate planning and probate law firm in the world.
I want to help as many people as possible protect their family, protect themselves, and have a great experience while doing it.
To reach that goal I need more people than just myself to be able to serve our clients.
And to be able to do that we need strong systems, processes, training, and aligned core values.
That aim takes my goals in a completely different direction.
So, here are my Q2 goals for the firm:
1) Finalize all updates to our estate planning and probate processes (we’re always refining these but we’re getting REALLY close to having a strong base to work from);
2) Create an add on training for clients that complete their estate plans to utilize some specific software to make transferring their sensitive information effortlessly;
3) Create video walk throughs of all of our estate planning documents, line by line, so clients can follow along with me when they get their draft for review; and
4) Create a Successor Trustee manual to make the transition even easier and seamless than it already is.
Move the ball forward consistently and strategically, and you can build the life you want in a relatively short amount of time.
I hope you have the best Q2 ever!
Cheers,
Christopher Small
