Estate Planning: I Don’t Care What You Want

Whenever people come into my office to talk about their estate plan I always tell them something up front:

I don’t care what you want.

Yep, I actually say that. But not in the context that you might be thinking.

There are a lot of estate planning attorneys out there that want to show everyone how smart they are or get you to create the newest, coolest estate plan vehicle, or just give you a lot of money for them to do to some work for you.

Me?

I just want to make sure what you want gets done.

And that’s why I don’t care what you want.

I don’t judge. I don’t heckle. I don’t even talk trash about you behind your back (and you wouldn’t believe how often this happens).

At the end of the day, I only care about one thing – that you are making an informed decision for what’s best for you and your family after hearing ALL of the information out there.

For example, there are some people that seriously need to consider a revocable living trust. There are people that need to seriously consider an irrevocable life insurance trust. And there are people that need to consider everything in between.

But even though I think people should consider it doesn’t mean they HAVE to do it.

It might not fit their goals and dreams.

And as an estate planning attorney it’s not my job to judge. It’s my job to do the work that is requested.

If you’ve got an estate planning attorney making you feel bad for the choices you are making then you’ve probably got the wrong person on your team.

Cheers.
