There are many reasons to make sure you have a Will, and as of last week, the State of Washington has decided to give you another one.

Last week a new law went into effect for intestate estates (estates without a Will) that increases the amount of work, the amount of court supervision, and, ultimately, the amount of legal fees for these types of cases.

The thought behind the new law is to prevent bad actors from opening probates for people’s estates and stealing their assets.

The thinking is that, if there is no Will, there is no proof of intention by the decedent who should be in charge and the level of court supervision that should be imposed.

So the legislature put some guardrails on the entire process.

What does all of this mean?

Nothing, IF you have a Will.
