The Best Trust Distribution Schedule… | Estate Planning Lawyer Letter #97
This one’s going to be short but packed with thought provoking material. So buckle up!
I’m in Spokane at the boys state basketball tournament so I’ve had A LOT of time to think. :)
One of the things people always want to know, or would like guidance on, is distribution schedule.
Here’s the super short version (and, spoiler alert – frameworks coming up, not rules!).
First, you should always start with your own family values and philosophies.
If you think your kids should get everything right away, or never, or only when they need it, that’s perfect.
However, if you are unsure, here are a couple of things to consider.
First, the time when people could use money the most is from 25-35. You don’t often have an established career, and therefore money will go the farthest.
Purchasing a home. Starting a business. This is the time of life when investments can yield huge results.
And, side note and food for thought – for most of us, our kids live through these ages while we’re alive – so consider investing in them while you’re still alive. :)
Second, from 18-25 is when most people think they need it, but usually have no idea how to use it or recognize good opportunities.
Third, after 45, most people are established in their career and life, so getting an infusion of cash moves the needle significantly less.
That’s it for today. Shorty but a goody.
Have a great week!
Cheers,
