Since the holidays are upon us and most of us are spending time with family, I thought this would be a great time to remind you of what I’ve come to see as the best inheritance you can give.

It’s not money.

It’s not real estate.

It’s not a business.

In fact, it’s not material at all.

The best inheritance you can give is your experience, your life philosophy, and your values.

And the only way to do that is by talking about what’s important to you and why you’re doing what you’re doing (in all aspects of life, not just estate planning).

It does very little good to give someone a million bucks if they have no idea what to do with it.

And yes, you can control distributions from the grave, which helps, but wouldn’t it be so much better if your beneficiaries were grateful for being given a fish but also had the confidence and the intelligence to go out and catch their own?

It’s not always easy or fun to talk about money or life and the lessons we’ve learned.

But if we don’t, all that experience is lost when we’re gone.

This holiday season, start giving your inheritance away, one story, one lesson, one open conversation at a time.
