The Rabbit Hole… | Rich Life Letter #016
You ever experience this as you think about estate planning?
“Well what if x…?”
“Oh well I’d do this… but then what if we did that and then y happens?”
“And what if this person I know and trust becomes blinded with greed with all of the money I’m going to put them in charge of?”
And on and on and on.
I call this the rabbit hole, and it’s frozen more people thinking about their estate plan in a place of doing nothing than probably any other factor out there.
And with good reason.
You want to make sure your people are protected.
You want to make sure your assets aren’t squandered or stolen.
You want to make sure you are taken care of if something happens to you.
And the rabbit hole is just waiting to freeze you up.
There is a simple solution though – so long as you add in a simple truth.
The solution is this – imagine how you’d want things handled if something happened to you within the next 3-5 years.
Who would be your people?
How would you want your assets handled?
And while this might STILL seem difficult, this truth should help you out: it is VERY easy to update your plan if things change.
It is impossible to predict the future, but it is possible to take action as the future presents itself.
If you’re my client, you already know this, but every year I send you an email on the anniversary of your signing date and let you know it’s been another year since you signed and to take a look at your plan to make sure everything still looks good.
So as your people get older, as your kids demonstrate carry or lack thereof, you can adjust.
Don’t go down the rabbit hole.
Sincerely,
Christopher Small
