Support and Maintenance in a Revocable Trust… | Rich Life Letter #112

Happy Sunday!

I’m sitting in the Wichita airport waiting to board my flight back to Seattle (went back to Kansas to visit some friends) and thought I’d take this downtime to shoot you a newsletter!

Today, we’re talking about “support and maintenance” in the context of a revocable living trust.

If you’ve read a revocable trust, then you’ve probably seen something like “distributions can be made on a discretionary basis for health, support, education, and maintenance” when talking about distributions after you are gone.

Health is pretty straightforward.

Education is pretty straightforward.

But what is support and maintenance?

You’re about to find out. :)

Support and maintenance are fancy ways of saying “maintain the normal standard of living the person is accustomed to.”

This would include things like housing, clothing, vacation schedules, etc.

The point is to allow your loved ones to enjoy life as they lived it when you were here.

As you might expect, there’s A LOT of room for interpretation here. That’s why it’s important to have a trustee in place that you trust, and why it doesn’t hurt if that person is active in your life in some way.

Knowing the standard and your expectations helps them carry out those wishes after you’re gone.

Hope this helps!

Have a great week!
