A True Story About Life’s Ups and Downs… | Rich Life Letter #129

Happy Sunday!

It’s holiday season, so I wanted to share a story with you about gratitude and luck.

Brooke (my wife) and I played tennis on Friday with a bunch of other couples. One couple, was not a couple, it was two guys (for context – this is mixed doubles – one lady and one guy).

I knew them both and made a joke about them playing together in mixed doubles. I knew one of the guys was just filling in because the other guys’ partner had to cancel last minute.

As I walked up to them one of the guys immediately said “I had a stroke two months ago. I died at my house and they brought me back.”

Whoa.

After he said that I could see he had all the signs of someone recovering from a stroke – his speech wasn’t perfect and he had gross and fine motor troubles, though for it only being two months ago he was doing great.

I told him, “hey, just so you know, I’m really happy you came back.”

The next thing he said was something we hear all too often… “guess we really should talk about that estate planning stuff, huh?” he said with a smile. “It was almost too late.”

And he’s right, it was.

Now, this is not a message to try to get you to do your estate planning.

It’s a message to remind you life has curve balls for all of us. We can’t know when they are going to be thrown at us. All we can do is our best to take care of them.

Hug your kids.

Call your parents and friends.

Tell the people that are important to you that you care about them.

It’s really easy to do because it’s the holidays and people are allowed to be mushy and sentimental this time of year.

Say it now, just in case you aren’t able to convey the message in the future, or they aren’t around to receive it.

Have a great week!

Cheers,
