How I Stop Procrastinating (a story) | Rich Life Letter #153

Happy Sunday from sunny and rainy Austin, Texas!

We had a great mastermind meeting this week and talked about everything from AI, to accounting and taxes, to client service, to therapy (there’s nothing off limits).

I wanted to talk about one of the things we talked about because I think it reaches across all of these different topics, and that is procrastination.

One of the people in the group, kind of playfully, was talking about the “type of person he is.”

“I have 4 projects at home. I start one, don’t complete it, and move on to the next one. Over and over and over again.”

What I heard him say was “I have several things I know I should do, that are important, but that I don’t want to do because they are new or they are hard or I just don’t like doing them.”

So I told him, “First, you are not someone that starts things and doesn’t finish them. That is a story you have in your mind. Stop telling that story today.”

“Second,” I told him, “the solution is simple. Pick ONE of those things off your list and just do it. Don’t think about it. Don’t plan about it. Just identify what needs to be done and do it.”

“Need to mow the lawn? Just mow it. Need to clean the garage? Just start with 10 items. Need to kick the soccer ball with your kid? Go outside right when you get home.”

I wanted to tell that story because I’m pretty sure it lands for all of us.

We all have things that we just need to do. We all have stories that free us from doing the things that we need to do (mostly that story is “I’m too busy right now”). And we all just need to start doing.

The other reason I wanted to tell this story is because this is ESPECIALLY true when it comes to things that are important but not urgent, like estate planning.

I know many of you need help with your estate plan because we’ve talked to you. And I know many of you aren’t doing anything about it because it’s easy to say “I’ll get to that later.”

It is easy to say that, but it’s not good for your life. :)

This week, pick something off your list and just do it.

And if that thing is getting started on your estate plan, find that email from us and take the next steps to get started.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
